MSU changes insurance mandate

EAST LANSING - Facing a financial penalty of the State, Michigan State University dropped its requirement that all new student health insurance.
Students are still required to complete a form indicating they have health insurance, you want a plan negotiated MSU-which costs about $ 1,500 per year or accept the risk of not having.
"It has always been to provide access to a small group of students who otherwise would not have been able to afford health insurance," said spokesman Kent Cassella University. "Our revised policy provides that access while giving individuals the opportunity to make a choice."
The requirement for health insurance has become a political issue earlier this year after the son of state Rep. Jeff Farrington, a Utica Republican, was against it. Nick Farrington MSU did not say he had insurance and was signed for the MSU-negotiated plan automatically, something his parents found out when they received a bill from the university.
MSU has rectified the situation. Jeff Farrington has not been done with it. He took the case to members of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education, MSU who hammered on this issue through the last months of winter.
The state budget approved earlier this month includes a provision that would count the cost of a health plan affiliated with a university as a "right" for any school that requires students state of have health insurance.

State Rep. Kevin Cotter, a Mt. Pleasant Republican and one of the most virulent opponents of the policy, stated his concern throughout was the requirement that the costs of health insurance would be added for some students, although some of his colleagues seemed to least as concerned a warrant.
"If they did this voluntarily," Cotter said, "that looks like good news for Michigan families."
